The only issue with unlimited power is that WoMD would be incredibly easy and cheap to make so America needs complete hegemony over the planet before we can reach fision. We have been able to since the 1920s. Hitler used it during WW2, and SA had started using it in the 50s. It's a process called Coal liquefaction. The oil it produces is actually cleaner than natural oil, though I doubt it's cheaper (at least right now)
