Why is work necessarily bad? I like working, and I have goals outside of it. Maybe if more people didn't structure their time around "wait for the workday to end to get drunk or watch netflix" and tried to improve their skills at their job (regardless of how much you are being paid, if you get better at your job, you will be able to drop the current place of work for another one for a better position/raise) or worked on side projects, they'd be happier and wouldn't need to drink outside of social bonding situations. Alcohol is tolerated because of tradition, the fact that it's extremely easy to produce, and the social element of it. Since it's been around forever, it's one of Mauss's "total social facts;" it has implications at every level of society.
