The issue the triggered the change of PM was energy. Australia has various pro-renewable policies in place that have led to rapidly increasing energy prices. We are literally shutting down coal power plants which are adjacent to hundreds of years of coal supply. Meanwhile billions are being handed to renewable energy companies.

Frydenberg was actually the energy minister (prior to today), so there's a question as to how they will change the energy policies following this but presumably they will change them somehow because they are vehemently opposed by half of the parliamentary party.

Ah, we kind of have that in America. It's called a "straight ticket," in some states you can just check a box at the top of the ballot for the general election and it'll just automatically choose all the candidates for the party you selected. So if you tick the 'D' box it fills in the bubble for all the Democrats.

It’s such a shame our politicians are a farce. At the next Federal election I’m honestly unsure of who to vote for. They’re ALL fuckwits, and no one represents my political leanings. I’m much more right-wing than any of the options.

In Australia we have preferenced voting. So you if you have 5 candidates you number them 1 to 5 in order of preference. When the votes are counted, they will eliminate the candidate with the least votes and allocate the votes based on the 2nd preference. They progressively eliminate candidates and transferring the votes until there is a clear winner.

5-8 candidates might be typical in a lower house seat (really there's only 2 or 3 in it and the rest are wackos). But in the senate it works differently.

In the Senate, not only are the votes preferrential, but they work on a quota. The quota is the population of each particular State divided by the number of senators up for election plus 1, (each state has 12 senators, with 6 normally being up for election at a time). So everyone in a state is voting into a giant count to find which candidates can achieve the quota. As before, it is preferential, so candidates who don't achieve the quota on the first count are eliminated and their vote is allocated based on their preferences.

For a senate ballot, there can be 50 or more candidates. Voting 'below the line' means number all boxes on the ballot (previously you had to number every single one or it was an invalid vote, at the last election it changed so you don't need to fill all boxes, your vote is then discarded if preferences are exhausted). There is literally a horizontal line on the piece of paper below which you find your 50+ boxes to number. Above the line there is a box for each "Group voting ticket". Normally each party will have a single one of these. If you vote above the line you put the number 1 in only one box above the line. What this does is allocate your 50+ preferences as per the organisation that registered the group ticket with the electoral commission. So obviously if you vote above the line for the Liberal party you can assume that your first preferences will go to Liberal candidates. However, people rarely understand what will happen to their preferences beyond the first few. Hence preference deals. Parties will do deals so that there is reciprocol,preferencing so Party A can preference Party B ahead of Party C and vice versa. These deals become critical in electing the last 1 or 2 senators out of the six.
