it's decadence. car culture created this culture revolving around decadence. you have cars in europe but they're not used as status symbols, and it wasn't until recently that people started seeing them as fashion accessories. they were just a form of transport that was private. a luxury, but not one only attainable to the rich. but americans are given access to all sorts of luxuries that people elsewhere would have to work half their lives for.

A lot of America is either decaying urban infrastructure or decaying infrastructure based around dead concepts such as mass rail travel. Both really have no future and are desperately trying to prop themselves up. I live in New York City and the infrastructure here is 2nd world, the people are 3rd world, but the quality of life is first world, even for the poor (free food with SNAP, apartment subsidy, etc). Some places out West and down the coast are definitely 1st world though.
