Reminder that Congo under Leopold was not "Belgian". Leopold employed whites from all over Europe, including many Belgians. The chopping off hands was a policy put in place to make sure blacks weren't wasting bullets. The author is a crazy leftist so I was very sceptical about this book at first. I had to read it for a class on the history of European colonization (I studied history in university). But I was pleasantly surprised by the attention to nuance by the author. I didn't get the impression he was attacking colonization in the usual manner. No historian can be neutral, but he did a pretty good job at it.
