China is looking to secure coal, diamond, metal, and mineral deposits by convincing the Communist ANC to confiscate land from White farmers and give to their Anglo and Chinese mining cronies. This angle was all to easy to choose given South Africa's history and that the US and European media would provide cover for the movement if it was couched in Leftist racial redistribution language.

If Trump's military intelligence divisions are even remotely doing their job, Trump is well aware of this situation. His tweet came out in the middle of Chinese/South African military conferences that ran from AUG 21-23.
His tweet had the added of effect of deepening support with the activist/radical wing of his base in a time where he is facing extreme pressures from a renegade Department of Justice. For Trump to have made a statement at such a time is, in no way, a coincidence.
China doesn't care about ethnic Chinese in South Africa out of any racial loyalty; rather, they are implementing the colonization strategy of the British empire which involved creating a Colonial Provincial Government out of local populations, often ethnic minorities. People who speak the language and don't have ethic differences with the Chinese are an obvious option.
This is as opposed to the French model of colonization, which would entail importing a colonial government from France itself. They are arguably doing this in Canada, however.
