There was no clear objective to victory, and victory was next to impossible when you consider the millions of people who supported the VC. They had villagers carving sticks into the ground. Children digging holes to hide grenades in. The regular army fared only slightly better than the VC, even though they were actually equipped with weapons instead of having 5 AKs to 40 men.

We won 98% of all battles in vietnam but lost the stomach for it, with good reason. The war was literally pointless and impossible to win from the outset. The terrain favored guerilla warfare to a huge degree, much like afghanistan.

I think he's suggesting that if you're going to fight a war, you should just fight it and not pussyfoot around about what you're doing. America wants to bully the rest of the world, but also wants to be seen as virtuous and heroic. We want to have our cake and eat it, too. We should have fought the war with the intent to take over the country and eliminate the opposing forces, not to set up some shaky puppet government and expect the rebel Vietnamese fighters to be able to hold their ground. But if you go around acting like the Roman empire in the 20th century, people are going to get pissed at you.

There were many reasons for the unsuccessful push back of communism in Vietnam, but the main reason is for independence. If you know ANYTHING about indo-china in those times, you know the Vietnamese had a desire for complete independence from any foreign power, and the U.S. was viewed as another invader/colonizer, no better than the french or Japanese. It was the resolve of the Vietnamese people that cost us the war, which by the way the U.S. did just fine in the battles. It's not an easy answer, because the problems of indo-china at that time were quite in depth. I can go further if you want me to, with much of the history

Three factors

- its far more difficult to occupy land against a local guerrilla force than it is to win big conventional set piece battles. Beating the Vietcong/NVA in the field = easy. Occupying rural villages across thousands of miles of dense jungle, trying to keep weapons, supplies and sabateours out of every single hut = not so easy. Would be probably be closer to trying to battle the cartles in south america and wipe out all drugs there then a traditional military action
