I seem to remember an economic history of Germany that suggests that wartime marshaling only happened because the underlying economy was still incredibly weak after the fall of the German empire and the failures of the Weimar Republic plus an intentionally crippling peace deal in the Treaty of Versailles. If productivity were to go up and companies were to require less labor that frees up resources and capital to do other things which may be more valuable to the greater society. Because art is a trait of decadence. Decadence in a good way. When a society is well managed, well employed and well fed you have time for decadence like art. But unfortunately that marks the downfall of a society as well. History repeats itself.

Then they take the profit and put it towards something else that allows them to retain the value of their profit, or increase the value of their profit. Incidentally, that usually means investing the money into another business or venture that may or may not succeed.

Noone refutes free market. The question is, when does business stop serving society and when does it begin to be profit just for profit sakes. Then it loses it's value to our society and should be abandoned.

If a society has time for art then it has time to ponder questions of culture and then advance that culture while enriching shared cultural experience. Cultures that never develop IE multi-culti are ripe for the kind of Judaic influence games and population splitting that leads to cultural decay.
