Here is a great example of the chickens coming home to roost. This was because even if they converted, they might still be tracked and looked at as people with jewish blood rather than just as Spanish Catholics. A large number likely converted, and then immigrated, possibly secretly keeping their religious customs. There are cultural customs found in certain parts of Mexico that are almost certainly Jewish in origin and likely came over with converso jewish settlers. Similar things happened in North America in French territories with Huguenots. They “converted” from Protestantism back to Catholicism, and then emmigrated, simce they were much less likely to be tracked or descriminated against in a wilderness territory.
