Plenty of developers have had sperg outs and changed the licenses on free software. What people do is fork the previous version before the license change if the license change is a problem.

Lets say you download version 1.0 of some free software and later on down the line of versions the developer changes the license to "everybody that uses this software must pay me a million dollars". That doesn't mean you owe that developer a million dollars just because you have an older version of the software with a free license.. The license you agreed to was the one distributed with the 1.0 version. You aren't obliged to follow a license that you didn't agree to and never received.

He cannot "revoke" IP he contributed to the project, as he signed away that right under most open source licensing.
