Once you send them off to school, you will lose them forever. They don't come back as the same cool kids you knew them as when they were growing up. They get resentful, depressed and quiet or angry. And they are angry at you, rightfully, for handing them over to complete strangers who push them around, ring bells at them, force them to sit down and shut up. We’re several years into homeschooling ours and we don’t regret a thing. They’re in a local homeschool coop, dance, sports, do day camps in the summer. They’re incredibly well adjusted, as well as academically advanced because we really care about what they’re learning and put the time in. Do it. You’ll all be fine.

Homeschooled my son in 2nd. He's able now at 4th to read at a 7th grader level and do simple algebra. They are covering simple division in class. He is learning nothing.

There was an online program called K-12 we used, free through the State. He learned Egyptian history, world mythology, and the five classes of animals.

I'm a teacher too and facing a similar dilemma. Not sure what would be best. On one hand, I want my son to experience some difficulty so he's prepared for dealing with morons in real life. On the other hand, I'm seriously considering leaving the profession because of the things that you've mentioned. Always having to teach to the lowest kid, the mixing of good hardworking kids with students who can barely write their name or are emotionally and mentally disturbed, the lack of support with discipline.. public schooling is shameful.

I dont know much about social life in american high schools, but in Portugal there is no bullying and i have never seen a teen pregnancy, at least on my school

One of the biggest frustrations my wife expresses is that children can no longer be publicly recognized for their achievements. For example, the school no longer has a high school valedictorian. Grades can't be posted anywhere where they can be seen by the other students, so there is no recognition for being at the top of the class. Homeschool. Do it. My kid is a beast, and smokes the shit out of any public school kid. Find a homeschool community. That way, the kid is part of a group. And, do lots of activities with other kids/groups, so the kid has a chance to form social skills.

My opinion is that it's best to send your kids off to school but that you should still do a lot of teaching yourself to make sure they aren't brainwashed. I was homeschooled for a year and it was fine but it would take a lot of commitment to do it long term and having your parent be your teacher could hurt that relationship.

If you do it, I would definitely recommend that your child does sports at a local school to ensure they are socialised normally. I wouldn't recommend too much socialisation at homeschool centers because those kids tend to not be the cream of the crop. Not bad kids, just kind of weak and low energy.

Homeschooling here. Kids learn two days a week with a class and we do three at home. It works for us because we have a plan to follow and the social interaction kids need.

Homeschooling makes for defective children. They need a certain amount of exposure to other human beings, and a certain amount of low risk injury / failure in order to learn that other humans are not to be trusted.
Public schooling can be great if it's a magnet school or a charter school or a school with 85% whites (and ideally the other percent are asians) BUT you absolutely have to take an active role in your kids education.
You need to find out what they're being taught, you need to get on them about their homework, you need to help them with the stuff they're struggling with or get them the help they need if they need help, and if they're coasting through and everything's a breeze then you need to find them more challenging shit or else, when they finally do hit something challenging, they won't have the skills to actually LEARN because they've just been coasting on talent the whole time.
That last part is incredibly important, there's a point at which natural talent stops and you've got to learn the skills to acquire new information, information/skills that may be genuinely hard to understand (assorted high level STEM shit).

You need to monitor all their texts, you need to monitor their google searches, you need to spy on them pretty much 24/7 but without ever telling them you're spying (otherwise you'll stunt them and they'll find ways around the spying).
It's super fucking hard being a good parent because by the end of the day you're exhausted, you don't have any mental energy left, so the idea of having to immerse yourself in the life of your child and all the shit they're learning is not appealing at all. But that's what you've got to do.
You also need to talk to them, a lot, "How was your day?" is shit, you need to ask "What did you learn today?" "What was your favorite class?" "What do you think about [topic]?" etc
