I wanted to buy a country house and went around the country for a solid year, its a huge new business to sell houses to english folk for 15 times their actual value. By far the stupidest thing to do is look for listings in english and the cleverest thing is to come here and hire a translator.

Now since you havent bought it yet, I can help you out a lot if you want - first of all, where would you like to buy it? Sofia, the capital, will mean you dont have to really change much from your current life since its basically a modern, lively city and has everything, but it has all the downsides of a big, highly populated city (albeit less than others). Im assuming you want a country life, so you have several choices - the most obvious one is around the area of Veliko Tarnovo. Most villages there are nearly all bought out by english expats so you have a ready community and no language issues, complete with pubs and shit. But that drives the price up and makes life a little bit less of an escape. Rhodopes are recently an extremely popular destination for westerners, since they are cheap, very sparsely populated and the most magical place in the whole world, objectively speaking.

If your budget is 75,000 pounds and you want a country house, spend 20,000 and not more. That will get you a 1/3-1/4 acre yard and a very decent house in a gyppo free area. The other 55,000 should be enough to live off off for 10-20 years, or until you die if you do stuff still. If you want to farm, you can likely just last with that.

I like Pirin, veliko turnovo, gabrovo, Varna. The house budget is up to £50,000 plus a few thousand for renovation. The thing with gyppos is they keep their roots even stronger than us. So while a gyppo village can be wholly abandoned, most of their money goes back there and they stay registered.
