We have a situation of beautifully crafted confirmation bias. A Democrat says "monkey" colloquially, and because we do not expect a Democrat to be racist towards black people, people take it as a simple colloquialism.

Republicans (all non-famous-Democrat whites really) HAVE been tarred with the "racist" label. Juan Q Public expects Republicans to be racist so when a Republican uses "monkey" colloquially he hears racism because he expects racism.

This is how brains work, it's how people work, and it's why after Trump called Jeb "Low energy", every time you saw Jeb sigh, try to struggle on a weird hoodie, or dejectedly say "please clap" you thought "That's some low-energy shit, low energy Jeb" instead of just blowing it off like you might if Ted Cruz was looking a bit more tired than usual one day.

All politicians lie, especially on the campaign. Trump himself lied a LOT, almost always to his benefit and in the "direction" of truth. But after Trump labeled Ted Cruz a liar, every time Ted Cruz lied after that it reinforced the label and made it stick harder.

Trump did this with "Crooked" Hillary, because whenever some shady shit would come out it would only reinforce the "crooked" label, not to mention when people would look at her she carried herself in an often bend or crooked manner.

This is the power of branding, and Republicans (now whites in general) have been branded "racist", so when we do or say some shit that's very rationally not-racist, things that are easily explainable, and which wouldn't think twice coming from someone else type of thing, it looks like a goddamned cross burning.
