The reason for this is because Google's image search looks for key words in file names and on the pages associated with the images it shows.
The issue is that, because white American family is still the "default", the terms "white American family" are only showing up linked to images when people are discussing the concept of the white American family. You see more mixed race images because the specific words are most commonly seen in articles of people talking about the changing demographics of the USA.
If you search only for "American family" then it becomes 80+% white in the search results.
