Father of a boy here. Would have had more children, but his mother became very ill and aren't likely to bear any more children (we lost another during her pregnancy to her illness).
My advice is to have a child only when you have grown past your youthful stupidity. By that I mean that you can't treat a relationship as something you replace the moment things get rough.
When you commit to becoming a family, you do it in good and bad days, regardless of you being married or not.
You need to be able to resolve conflicts and work together to build a home together. To be a better father than the one you had.

Your job from the point your first child is born, until the day you die, is to provide for your family. To make the tough the decisions, financially and otherwise.

After living like what, 7 years there, I have to interject with doubt. Don't take me wrong, they are more based than the west but things just seem to be going down. In my workplace, we had very few women, because the majority of the engineers there were husbands with stay at home wives. I saw how those chaps would try to drink their sorrows away at the end of the day, and let me tell you that it wasn't a pretty sight. We were all on top of our lives in terms of quality of life from a monetary sense, but those guys used to come back home to suffer. Not only they didn't have kids, but their wives rode them hard, even worse than in the west. The few women in the workplace weren't better either; only like 3 were hot, and even they were desperate because at the time, the culture of regarding such old women (on their mid twenties) as "kurisumasu ke-kus" was at an all time high, and they usually found themselves with men who obviously were after quickies rather than actual relationships. They were very desperate and tried coming onto a few of us during work hours to no avail. I felt annoyed but pitied them for not having a family because of their lack of interest in their early life. Fast foward now, the number of women in such situations in Japan just goes up. Some guys here probably know just how easy it is to fuck a woman there even if you are a literal trashcan of a man, and that is because things REALLY have degenerated. The women get increasingly unhappier but won't reflect and start acting properly in their early life and the men just won't have anything more to do with that bullshit and started moving on to more fulfilling things. Depression is at an all time high, and so are suicides, all because they refuse to go back to traditional values.
