Most home computers now have a much greater capacity for serving files than servers did 10-15 years ago. Using the right protocols, files (even video and audio) can easily be served up without Youtube, Facebook, or any other commercial carriers. The system is working as intended, except people aren't keeping up with advances in the hardware/software.
