Kids utterly addicted to smartphones. Literally 95% of them have their face in the phone all day long.
Completely ADD, can't focus for more than 15 min max.

Going along with that last one, over 50% of my students have various 'issues' that grant them things like bonus time on tests, free notecards for tests, able to wear hoods in class, passes to leave class whenever.
I live in a once-white city and at school the whites are like 40% or less, most are mexican.
The job is thankless as fuck and these kids dont know how to use things like a ruler or a compass. Extreme learned helplessness.
OP, this is an opportunity. Kids are fucking sponges, if you can be the "cool teacher" they'll listen to whatever you have to say. Be a hero and save a classroom full of fucked futures

I once considdered becomming a teacher because teachers at my school had it pretty good. But I realised that's because it's a school with 95% whites where 80% are from christian famillies. Those dream scenarios are rare.

I graduated from the "Highest scoring" military high-school in the country, they treat the teachers like dog shit and the students are considerably worse behaved.
The only benefit to this place as a teacher is the ability to force students into physical punishment (exercise) and external punishment (removing privileges outside of class) to enforce rules
I started to interview applicants to our job positions (IT company) last year and I feel like 50% of candidates are undiagnosed retards.

it’s worse because universities used to be for the above average student. They let anybody in now and it’s depressing as shit because most are gonna fail out with debt or be passed through without really learning anything. I was inspired to teach when a lab partner in college called me a human calculator because I could add double digit numbers in my head. its a thankless job, but I try to improve the world around me. on the plus side, its easy to get a job because men are diversity hires in public school teaching
I don't mean "cool teacher" in the cinematic sense, but I'm having trouble explaining what I mean.
It's hard for me to relate because my highschool situation was drastically different than the normal, but I definitely still had teachers that changed my worldview. I don't feel like you have to show no emotion, though I understand not getting emotional ties to certain people. I think it's very easy to tell the difference between a teacher who cares about their job and a teacher who doesn't, and in my case, I had much more respect for teachers who seemed to give a shit.
Again though, I went to a military boarding school for all 4 years of high-school that had a program where teachers "adopted" students to take them out to dinner and shit throughout the week off campus since we didn't see our families all year. So maybe my experience just clouds my judgement.
