Infosec consultant here. I've seen these threads the last few days, I'm not up to speed, but I think this feature on iPhone is suspicious because the only reason I can think they would use unique ID's is for further analysis either:

1. when they drop online
2. Internally in Apple.

What I'd most like to know is whether anyone has suggested / revealed how this naming convention is arrived at.

For example if they are generating the UIDs using personally identifiable information like part of your birth date, or a customer ID then should they be publicly accessible? No, is the short answer. A big No under most regs globally. And if these other posts here are true
and then by enabling the discovery of your identity online by an analysis of image file names from your phone, that they designed, then they are seriously out of line and can expect serious court time very soon.

Then, being charitable, if they only want to use these UIDs for internal analysis and the hashes are effectively impossible to trace users with, it still reeks. It just looks like they are using that naming so they can smash millions of photos together to grep through them for fuck only knows what, and thats the most charitable interpretation I can think of because they are of course well within their rights to use it to analyse YOU, as an advertising mark etc cos you clicked on the EULA.
