Most of the democratic/anti-regime leaders in the south were communists. However, when the United States got possession of the territory, it actively encouraged Syngman Rhee to imprison or execute these leaders.
So SK is what would have become of Korea had the Japanese Empire stayed intact, while NK is what it would have become if Koreans were left to their own devices.

I always saw SK as a knockoff wannabe Japan with less history. America rewired Japan after World War 2, but I feel like despite their now peaceful nature and remarkable capitalism, they have a sense of history and culture that I don't see from Koreans. SK seems obsessed with being western, they don't seem to have much culture that is unique to them. Could be wrong of course, I've known many Koreans but never been there myself. They also seem preoccupied with Japan and achieving their success, and they've beaten them in shitty birthrates and suicides, so I guess thats an accomplishment.

SK was a third world country full of mountain villagers just a little over 60 years ago. They industrialized in about 20 years and started dominating their specializations in 40. They grew fast and became new money, which is admirable in effort but they also adopt nearly everything the west does (good, bad, and ugly) and turns it up to 11, which is where the insanity can come from.

SK's history was iron-fist dictatorship for many decades. The title of President was mostly just a figurehead title and democracy was a joke. Everything the state could control was centralized, only loosening its grasp in the late nineties.
Think rapid industrialization as 18 hour days plus overtime, lolno labor laws which persist to today, a police and military force that banhammered anything that wasn't profitable, and massive protectionist policies that made sure that Koreans only had and only knew Korean products. For example, the 100% import tax on imported cars was only lifted a few years ago. There are also a gorillion Korean knockoffs of anything you can possibly imagine due to import protections, which also discourages foreign companies from making inroads into the country. They're only beginning to change this but it's a really slow process. The old guard and the controlling families of SK do not like relinquishing control until they absolutely have to.
During that time, SK never really grew into its own. They copied the US and added their own twist by viciously protecting every little gain and advantage they got.
That's what happened when America took power of SK. Imagine what would've happened if the peninsula turned communist.
