Transportation in the US is much more difficult than in Deutschland. There's no real rail network and public gathering places, you have to have a car to get anywhere in most towns and cities like Charlottesville and then parking becomes an issue. Plus the sheer size of the US is something you Europeans don't seem to get. Driving from my city (Nashville, Tennessee) to Charlottesville, Virginia is a full day's drive and we are both in the same subregion of the country (Upper South).
