I'm going to assume you're some sort of Leninst given you call yourself a communist (as opposed to a Trotskyist, a Dem-Soc, a Soc-Dem, an anarchist, a syndicalist, etc).
If you're in favor of creating a "dictatorship of the proletariat" type of system with a party that has total power headed by a general secretary or similar who has absolute power, how do you prevent that power from being abused, and in what sense haven't you created a power dynamic very similar to the one that exists in capitalist oligarchic societies? If you don't favor that system of government, what system of government do you favor and in what meaningful sense is it different from ones we've already seen?
What's your barometer for success? The per capita GDP? Life expectancy? Some proxy for happiness? Freedom (I'd assume not)?

It's more or less a matter of public record within the Chinese Communist Party that the cultural revolution resulted in famine. I've gone to school with students whose parents worked in famine during the cultural revolution. There are photos of Cambodian killing fields and Soviet gulags. Is there anything that would change your mind? If not, isn't your commitment to materialism and historicity subordinate to Leninist lines that may be materially errant?

There are probably a few exceptions, but you can't deny that a large majority of active socialists care far more about "smashing white supremacy" than they do about actually establishing a socialist or communist government. If a bunch of socialists took the red pill and became nationalists, the communities they joined would inevitably become more socialist than they were before, so its not like they would have to give up their ideology.
