The thing is that there was a great divide between eastern and western jews. The latter one were the proto-type of the modern liberal-to conservative american jews, westernised fully, but still set apart by their faith. Often practising it as secular europeans did their christianity at this point. While you had europeans who put the nation above christ (as the old medievalesque christianity had pretty much died out in western europe), you had jews who as th eternal minority were in turn more likely to identifie with utopian ideologies such a communism or the modern kind of western liberal democracy.
These ended up being killed for this reason, but they also often were wealthy and educated enough to flee when they could read the signs. (ironically, the westrn jews that got caught were probably those most assimilated into german society as they refused to abandon it.)
Eastern jews however, still practised their faith like in medieval times (not unlike how christianity in the deep balkans and parts of the orthodox world pre-communism still retained a faith that seemd to stem from a more archaic world)
