The human race wont survive without space exploration. In the short term if we don't develop the technology to deflect asteroids on a collision course with earth, we'll all die the next time there's a large impact. They happen on average every 200k or so years and we're overdue our next one.
Longer term, in the Billions of years range we'll need to move everyone to another solar system that can support life when our sun burns out, becomes a red giant and consumes the earth.
