Because burgers have virtually no culture and history. European nations have thousands of years of tradition and culture that gave them many rituals and traditions and make their culture feel rich and meaningful.
Burgerland is a very young nation with no history prior to the 17th century. They had to come up with new rituals to honour the country. Since they have little culture that could have spawned somethibg neaningful they had to make up shit like pledging allegience to a flag which makes burger patriotism look like childish make believe.
This wont be a permanent situation tho. Give it a couple of hundred years and George Washington will have the same recognition and reference than William the Bastard has in England or Barbarossa has in Germany.
