The burger is correct. Nationalism in and of itself is not imperialistic. But it is common for a strong nation state to become imperialistic, Either via war, diplomacy, or influence.

Maybe with the facts. An empire is, by definition, a state that rules over multiple nations. You cannot be a nationalist without supporting the nation state model.

Colonies are the result of expansionism, not imperialism.

Having colonies doesn't automatically make you an empire. Spain, France, and to a somewhat lesser extent, the UK, each ruled over natives in America. Imperialism in Africa was the same. It wasn't the initial trading post colonies Portugal set up that made it an empire, it was when they started moving into land and ruling over the people there.

Imperialism was abandoned literally because of the fact that multi-national states almost always have issues with stability.
