Because they were worried that Criminals would use them to kill people So they tried to Pass a Law which failed in the senate. Then the Democrats waited for a Bill that no one would show up to to vote on and tacked the Hughes amendment onto it making it a law.
Now we have this NFA list of Automatic weapons that people can sell between one another if they have the correct paper work. And only 1 NFA weapon has ever been used in a crime and it was a Cop :D, because the only people we can Trust with weapons are the Government.

Well, back in the day you could privately own a ship o' the line, and if you had the money and manpower you could sail off to a foreign port and blockade an entire country starving it's inhabitants if you so chose.
