This has become even easier with the use of AI. In fact, I'm pretty fucking sure the NSA and such already have idiomatic footprints of most people who post on Jow Forums, facebook, reddit, tumblr, etc.

Telegraph operators in the 1800s could identify each other by their "fist" - the way in which they made the dots and dashes using the telegraph key. WW2 codebreaksers could identify individual cipher clerks via similar means. I don't know of anyone getting a search warrant based on that, but identifying individuals from communication patterns is old.

A smart adversary would not only post-process text to disguise these things, they would seed low-probability patterns from other people they wanted to set up. Also "you can't have your cake and eat it, too" is correct. It's just that most people don't understand that "have" in this context means "to hold" as opposed to "to eat", so it sounds redundant if you don't understand the context. So reversing the order of the saying makes it clearer.

Obviously the state can easily know who you are because they can pull the records from the ISP and the NSA monitors everything and so on. But the state is not the only entity in play, far from it.
