General rule is the further south you go the safer it is.
Rural South island is great- everyone is based. Rural north island is bad- usually rough towns with high maori population, you wanna avoid these places. Fine to visit little north island towns, but you would never live there.

The city I'm in is full of volcanos. We have a really big one that you can see from the city which you can catch a ferry over and explore if you want to escape for a while.

There's also a bunch of islands overlooking the city that you can go to. Waiheke is really nice. Vineyards, nice beaches, gourmet food, etc, etc.

It was after a week in Paris that I went to Majorca, so coming from that shithole it was an amazing breath of fresh air.
