sudtirol went to the Italians after world war 2. Now Sudtirol was, like northwest poland, ethnically German and resulted in the similar ethnic conflict within the state. Sudtirol is probably top-10 most beautiful places on Earth, and Hitler understandably wanted it to stay Germanic. Mussolini realized in Trump-style fashion it would be better to just give Hitler his damned sudtirol in exchange for guaranteed alliance. After the war, there were terrorist attacks and unrest in south tyrol and it wasn't until the 70's that it was declared an independent state. In comparison pretty much all of south italy receives about 25k per capita, per annum.
Since there's only about 65% German speakers in that region, the rest being mostly Italians, this leads me to believe that Süd Tiroler are doing much better than the average Italian.
