The Marine generals involved in Vietnam (Krulak, Walt, Cushman, etc.) all thought that Westmoreland was a retard and made it a point to ignore his instructions. The only general who really liked Westie was Gen. Wheeler, who had no combat experience and had been a pogue all of his career.

Funny thing was that there were three other generals who were originally considered to take over MACV; Bruce Palmer (who basically ran the Pentagon when Westmoreland was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff), Harold Johnson (of PROVN fame), and of course Abrams. Any one of them would have listened to the good advice that Westmoreland had received early on, and the war would have turned out very differently.
