The reservation system is pretty ducked up, what a lot people don’t know is that by living on one you can’t use any land, build a house, or do any work.
You don’t own anything, it’s all “tribal land” which gets used in the manner that the tribal council seems fit.
The Lumbee Indians were never federally recognized and had to integrate with main stream culture. They have become very prosperous in the Carolinas where they are from, probably have their own issues but not to the degree that occurs on reservations.

I know a few people through university who record and research the last speakers of Unserdeutsch, the only pidgin language of German, spoken in New Guinea, with less than 80 speakers left and less than 10 who speak it well. They are truly happy that people care to preserve their language and stories.

Our Reservations in Canada are simply staging point for raids on whites now. It is totally out of control. They take my taxes, and then subsidize the breeding and welfare of Indians. Then, when (if) they get caught, they get a lighter sentence than non Indians (see Gladue Report, below). We used to have an 'ilegal' pass system to keep them under control, but no more.

Missing some of the enzymes to process it in a few tribes, the rest - alcohol was a common trade good on the frontier (along with coffee, flour, sugar and fatback), and the northern natives had no culture of drinking alcohol. So, rather than drinking a little, they'd drink to excess. Plenty of chieftains traded their entire tribe's land for whisky etc. In more modern times, all sorts of drugs are common, not just alcohol. Reservation life is so depressing, there's not much else to do but drink, fuck or shoot up.
South of the deserts are a completely different culture... They had alcohol already, as well as human sacrifice lol what a wonderful bunch of people.

I still have some family up in Canada on one of your 'first nations'. Honestly, the British empire treated Indians better than the Americans did, and look at the result. Canadian Indians still seem to have some sense of resistance to the state once in a while, while down here that pretty much died out (with a few major exceptions). That stuff doesn't make anyone's life any better, though.
The schools happened down here, too, but so many of the eastern Indians were already either dead, shipped west or interbred before the 20th century, and the western ones just live in isolated poverty, so... Nobody really cared much I guess. In Canada, at least, some of that was happening in the 20th century, close enough to Toronto for people to notice.
As for the Christian-ness... The French missionaries we got were pretty fucked in the head. I assume that the church sent them here hoping we'd kill them.

The res I could go back to explicitly banned casinos as degenerate, but another one near there has a pretty decent one. Here's how to take over:

3. Make all the elders dependent on your good graces

I lived near a rez, but avoided it. I'm not native at all but had native relatives, through marriage. (Not my own) went to pow wows, swaet lodge, tipi ceremonies, stuff like that. Got invited to Sundance, but didn't go. I know I'd get dirty looks.
The Indians I knew who practiced NAC stuff where basically all extremely awesome people to hang out with. They all ate peyote, and had totally renounced alcohol. The Indians I met who drank were fucked up. Some were happy drunks, but most were miserable and wanted to take you to miserytown with them.
