Everywhere I go I see young families now. There was a gap somewhere with people born in maybe the 1970's or so where they were selfish, bored of life, and didn't engage with their father.

Reducing the population level in the long term might be good, the problem is when it happens too fast and the age pyramid becomes very unbalanced it's going to come with some pain. Less working people means less wealth to go around. The young work harder to support the old, and they all have less overall. And you have to compete with other nations that don't have the same demographic problems (although most western nations will have a lot of problems too at this point). If you're young and wealthy or an expert in your field or whatever, why should you stay in Japan in those circumstances? There will probably be a huge brain drain to the US in the upcoming decades.
Robotics might change a lot of this though. But they better not screw it up.
