Thank you for your service. I didn’t serve but I feel guilty as hell thinking how miss led I was about the whole situation.

I was three weeks into my first job out of college at a bank located in 2 World Financial Center directly under the shadow of the North Tower.

I remember being at my desk and all of a sudden people started screaming about an explosion in the WTC. We all rushed outside and there was rubble coming down like rain. People were already jumping. I remember seeing a human hand about 15 feet from me in the middle of West Street. I still remember the smell. Dry. Arid.

We all returned to our offices until the second plane hit the South Tower when we started to evacuate. As we were walking uptown on West Street the South Tower came down. I can only describe the noise as buckling steel following by an animalistic groan. We bolted down West Street to a ferry which took us to New Jersey where I spent the next two days with some other employees sleeping at my bosses house. Most of our office was damaged when the North Tower basically came down right on top of it. I have never stepped foot inside the World Financial Center again and didn't go back to Ground Zero until 2009.

I make jokes to hide the pain, for years I’ve had conflicting emotions from anger at those who died who’s deaths I feel caused the cultural shift I hated, to now where I still make jokes about it but hate both the entire religion of islam for theri attacks and fantiacism that has been nonstop in increasing fashion since 9/11, to the gov who puppetered the whole thing. 9/11 is one of my first really vivid memories that I can still remember like I was there. I was in kindergarten, and since I lived in California the attacks occurred pretty early. I remember getting out of bed early for some reason. I walked into the living room at 6:30. My dad was standing in the middle of the room watching the news. When I walked in they showed the footage of the second tower getting hit. My dad told me to go back to bed. At school they marched us all out into a field and told us what happened. Chilling stuff.

I'm from Brooklyn. I grew up in a neighborhood pretty close to the river and you can distinctly see Lower Manhattan when you walk down certain blocks. I remember heading to 3rd grade that day and while I was walking to class, you could see the towers up in flames. I went to school and we were told that there was the WTC was hit by a plane and that they were going to send us home. We went home and I remember my parents freaking out. My sister and I were confused but I think we were both old enough and aware enough to know that people were dying not too far away. The air smelled like smoke and burnt hair or plastic.
We saw the towers go down with a bunch of our neighbors. We were mostly aware that it was an attack
I also had a cousin who was trapped downtown in a building and mentioned that the sound was horrifying and the loudest sound he had ever heard. Two cousins of mine from Staten Island who were firemen also died when the buildings came down.

I was 10 and sitting in class in 5th grade somewhere in Texas. The teacher wheeled a TV into the classroom and flipped it on just in time for us to see the second plane impact. She turned it off and I remember kids sort of panicking and a couple of kids I thought were being drama queens were crying. I remember saying, "it's nothing, that's just a historical event, right?" to the teacher and she said no, it was happening live. Kids started getting called to the office to go home after that, most parents came and got their kids. Got home later that day and my mom was going through shittons of mail like nothing happened and she's from New York which is strange looking back on it. Every channel was non-stop coverage of the events and it stayed like that for weeks.
