The US supporting the Afghans against the USSR and the USSR supporting North Vietnam could be considered analogs but this is even different from that.

You need to understand why the first two world war happened, they both started out of obligation to help their allies in war, so Austria went to War with hungary, Britian and Germany had to fulfill their obligations, and those allied with them had to fulfill their's as well, same goes for WW2
Yet, during the Korean war, we never went to war with China, and we never went to war with Russia during the Vietnam war, and we STILL haven't gone to war with them over Syria, despite the fact that we've directly targeted the regime multiple times.
