i wrote a paper about this. creating a universe simulation in our universe simulation would be impossible because a machine cannot perfectly replicate itself. if we don't create a universe simulation then it might prove we are in a simulation, but we would still have no way of even knowing if a universe simulation is possible so that's a non-answer. if we do create a universe simulation then we can be sure that we are the precursor population.

Ot is high time "simulationists" introduce the distinction of "materialist simulationist" (all of physics is being simulated) vs. "empiricist simulationist" (only subjective povs are simulated).
