(1/2) According to the IMF, the USA’s GDP in 2017 amounted to 19.390 trillion $. At the same time, defence spending in 2017 amounted to 590 million $, says the Congressional Budget Office. Active military is 1 348 400, reserve military 857 950, so 2 206 350 in total. America’s population is around 326 million. This means that America’s military expenditure amounts to 3.04% of GDP. Military personnel comprises 0.68% of the population.
Now, on to my point. Since I was born and raised in Germany, I’ll use this country as an example.
Germany currently has a population of around 83 million. Nominal total GDP for 2017 was 3.263 trillion € (not $, keep this in mind) Let’s say, Germany spends the exact same percentage as the US in military expenditure. It would amount to 99.20 million €. Let’s round this up and say 100 million €.
Now, if Germany had the same percentage of the population in military as America, it would number to around 564 400.
Let’s focus on the money, 100 million €. This may sound like much, but it actually isn’t. Let me explain. Germany’s workforce numbers around 44.3 million. If every member of the workforce alone would contribute 2.26 € ANNUALY, we’d meet the military budget. Heck, just raising the VAT by 0.1% could accomplish that goal.
(2/2) For comparison: every German household has to pay 210 € ANNUALY for useless state-sponsored TV. Not only that, I myself pay about 20 € A MONTH in what is called Solidaritätszuschlag, which is basically a special tax to pay for reunification with the Ex-GDR, and frankly, is no longer needed. Heck, let’s keep the Solidaritätszuschlag, divide it by 4, and BOOM, the budget for military is met.
This is more than doable, guys. Let’s step the fuck up.
Now, I’ve done my part, if you want you can run the numbers for your country and report your results. Personally, I’d me more than willing to pay 2.26 € a year for defence.
