I've been thinking (with my internal monologue) about this issue extensively.

I am a former division 1 football player with a masters degree in science. I feel like I have experienced a duality of thought based upon circumstance. While in school, driving, in the library, at Wendy's etc. I constantly have an internal monologue. I am always posing topics and debating them internally. It's like that Pixar short with the old man playing chess. I feel I can plan out my beliefs with criticism.

However, when I'm playing football, everything goes to shit. I think I'm turning off the higher order part of my brain. I am absolutely living in the moment. I am nearly always correct in my decision making without hesitation. I feel like I am stuck on a rollercoaster with my body taking control and my mind is in the back seat. I often have trouble recalling exactly what happened on the previous play. I have to see film of it to practice and improve.

Playing football and being constantly under attack by people trying to knock you out on your ass is primal behavior that is best run on instinct. You would be very unlikely to be running an inner monologue during this and it would probably be extremely unhelpful given how many things are going on around you. Whenever I get into "danger" situations (threat of car crash etc) my thinking instantly switches off and I just start acting on instinct. I'm not surprised you do the same during football.

I know exactly what you mean, when I work it seems I think in a more "forward" manner, meaning I think about nothing except what's currently happening. It's actually a choice I had to make so I could keep pace with everyone else, otherwise I get bogged down by thinking about other things or issues. It's just as you say, automatic and shallow. I think it's in this state of mental shallowness that most people reside in, only caring about the present/near future.
