Enlightenment also does not entail a destruction of the ego mind, including inner monologue. It's simply a shift of consciousness so that one does not identify with the ego mind (brain computer). The mind is a tool, including the inner dialogue.
The ability to translate inner experiences and non-verbal thoughts into language is the cornerstone of human civilization. NPCs lack this ability, and thus lack the ability to create or sustain civilization.

Reality is a construct of the mental. The German idealists were obviously correct, and the realists incorrect.
Each individual is their own thought form crafted from the soup of collective consciousnesses that constitutes our universe. An 'npc' is just someone who has not developed their own thought form fully or even at all. As such Zen Buddhism will not work for such npcs until they develop their own thought form more fully; at best they can cargo cult it.
Meditative practice is about shutting off all activity in your mind and letting your thought form experience reality divorced from its typical task of ordering the brain around. As such an npc will simply experience nothing when they meditate. When they shut their brain off their ill formed thought form will meld into the collective unconscious without retaining any of themselves.
Gautama Buddha's teachings are very much entangled in Indian cultural baggage from that time period (dependent origination, heaven/hell realms, demons and shit). Zen is basically a cut-the-bullshit guide to liberation. Zen itself, while more minimal, doesn't escape cultural baggage either though. It has a lot of Chinese metaphors and myths that are sometimes necessary to read up on for context when it comes to certain koans and whatnot. Some books are more incisive than others. Bodhidharma is the earliest 'zen master' and I think he gets to the core of the matter pretty skillfully.
