Up until the late 80s Africans that migrated to Europe actually had to work their ass off to even manage to get here, they knew sure as hell not to fuck up and be sent back. They learned life lessons through struggle that made them more aware and they came to create a good future for their children.
Again, most of them, exceptions exist.
Now it's a different, even the lowest of the low can come here. You don't need work ethic and smarts to even make the way to Europe now. There is no more natural selection.

I lived there for a few years as an aid worker in Sudan and South Sudan (just after independence).
It was adventurous and romantic, and often frustrating, but it wasn't much worse than any regular job I held back home in Canada. To be honest, work is work wherever you go, except for the occasional AK-47 brandished in your face. Had a great time and would never trade the experience for working back in a corporate office. People there are not competent or bright and are sometimes entitled, but for the most part, they're good, friendly, warm people. Much friendlier than most people walking the streets of the first world and a billion times friendlier than the average Basketball American. Go figure.
