Was the artist in the wrong here? Did he really have to make it a racist comic?
Was the artist in the wrong here? Did he really have to make it a racist comic?
fuck off, this isn't Jow Forums
>draws white girl petite with average features
>draws black girl with exaggerated features and manly gorilla body
Wew lad
She’s a cunt, so he’s within good reason to make fun of her.
Because she literally looks like that. She looks like a fucking man.
i think the racism is that they made the opponent from a japanese mix girl into a white girl. when she is also tanned.
Author will play it off as caricature and you're-the real-racist for seeing it as negative.
The predictable cadre of people will defend it, cartoonist may or may not lose job then they may or may not rake in patreon bux for a few months.
Personally I think she was on a winning streak for so long in a white dominated sport that the media is now hyper focusing on her one "fault", seeing it as comeuppance whether they'll admit to it or not. Most likely they'll praise some other tennis player for the exact same thing as being "passionate".
Osaka is dark as fuck my dude, in the drawing he made her a blonde white lady. Pretty clear what he was going for.
the only winning move is just to never draw black people
>exaggerated features
>Pretty clear what he was going for
Never seen so many retarded blind people on an art board.
And people will complain and point as a racist, because you never draw black people.
You make this exact thread with the exact same comment on /b
data miners. Get used to it.
In the drawing Serena is also lighter than her actual complexion. Dark complexions are harder to paint and to read, that's just reality.
In any case, this is trivial and a distraction from the real story, which was that Serena lost her cool but was still gracious to Osaka in the end, the idiots who booed ruined what should have been Osaka's moment at the US Open, and the media is complicit in this for focusing on William's loss instead of Osaka's win because faux outrage gets more clicks.
I'm happy that Serena hugged her atleast.
I still feel awful that Osaka essentially apologized for her win though when it should have been a celebration
>there are people this brain-dead posting with you on /ic/
>Dark complexions are harder to paint and to read, that's just reality
So you should just paint dark people white? I mean I understand if you change the lighting for readability but that legit looks nothing like her. I agree with you about the rest though, it shouldn’t really have even been a story and now people are taking sides on the Serena issue instead of just appreciating the win.
in the guy's defense, he's borderline /beg/tier so capturing any likeness isn't something he does very well.
they both share the same skin color.
>check tweet responses
wow, black fragility and white people's negrophilia are a real thing
This looks like op image to you? Ya I wouldn’t admit that outside of Jow Forums dude
Yeah this is pretty racist, he drew her looking bad on purpose.
>So you should just paint dark people white? I mean I understand if you change the lighting for readability but that legit looks nothing like her.
No, I just wouldn't feel the need to call that racist. We're talking about a cartoon drawing here. Even the umpire is lighter than his actual complexion. You're holding this one aspect up to standards that aren't being applied to any other part of the image. Cartoons need to read quickly, and be done quickly. This hangup with skin color completely ignores context and practicality.
I'm reminded of the outrage over those ai cameras couldn't pick out black people, or black faces being underexposed in photographs. Those are problems that need to be fixed, but I wouldn't call them racist problems. I myself am darker complexioned like Osaka. I absolutely would want these kind of problems to be ironed out so I don't get run over by self driving cars. But I can appreciate that these issues are based on realities rather than racism.
The difference is that those are automated errors in programming and hardware while this is a piece of art made by one guy. All the guy had to do was use the color picker and paint her with a different color. Even if we take the racist angle out of it, I honestly don’t get why you’re defending such a retarded ass artistic choice. If we apply your logic to art then people should just avoid drawing/painting dark skinned characters because it’s “impractical” and runs contradictory to “reality”? What reality was stopping this dude from opening up his color wheel and dragging it down a little? It really isn’t that hard. I don’t know anything about the guys views so I won’t comment on that but you defending his shitty art is kinda weird.
I'll say it again. All three characters are lighter than their actual complexion. You're selectively applying standards by complaining only of Osaka and turning it into a racial thing.
I'm not defending the idea of the cartoon. It makes a banal observation and adds nothing to the story. I'm saying people like you need to stop policing skin color and pouring over every drawing with an eye dropper tool.
>Ya I wouldn’t admit that outside of Jow Forums dude
don't worry, they won't
You're being racist.
Are you legitimately retarded? Serena Williams is black and she’s painted black. You say that she’s “a few tones lighter” but she still reads as a black person. The ref is white and painted white. Again you say that he’s lighter than irl but he still reads as white. Osaka is dark yet painted white and reads as a blonde white woman. It’s not some meticulous calculation, conspiracy or agenda pushing. Neck yourself for the good of this board, Jesus Christ.
>Osaka is dark yet painted white
You don't need to kill yourself, but you should get your eyes checked if you think Osaka's skin tone here is closer to the umpire.
Just looked at his other stuff and he’s like Ben Garrison 2.0.
Not him but that’s not how color works. The same exact hue and value can appear different based on where it is placed in the piece. + he rendered the black lady with the soft brush so there’s gradation while the other player is in flats.
>As an artist, your job is to copy everything exactly as you see it
>Exaggeration? In art!? A cartoon of all places? What are you an idiot?
This is how dumb you sound. You are making a massive non-argument because you don't see the context. Let me bring you up you speed; this is an art board, where we discuss art and forms of art. Art is incommensurable, of no common measure. To say something should be drawn a specific way completely defeats the purpose it.
>Ya I wouldn’t admit that outside of Jow Forums dude
You are too dumb to even comprehend the statement I made. What shouldn't I admit? That a cartoonist should exaggerate a parody? A website is a goalpost for blocking knowledge? Well maybe you should go use a better one then.
Just kidding, you're here forever.
T.
>he rendered the black lady with the soft brush so there’s gradation while the other player is in flats.
That's the point. Osaka and the umpire aren't shaded because they're in the background. She isn't "painted to be white", as the other poster claimed. The color I picked from Serena is the midtone. That's as fair as such a comparison can be.
He's the one obsessing over the color. I just don't see an issue with this. But there are plenty of worse things about this image. The caricature itself is pretty bad.
>roid for tennis
>still lose
>this is an art board, where we discuss art and forms of art
people are discussing the caricature right now
>To say something should be drawn a specific way completely defeats the purpose
nobody said this. people are just pointing out the artist didn't have the most noble intentions
>Serena lost her cool but was still gracious to Osaka in the end
Too me she came across as the kind of person that could plot to kill someone that threatens her position as nr 1. She was "gracious" cause Osaka was crying and it made her look like a giant bitch.
Image the handies she gives
but telling the truth is noble user
>people are discussing the caricature right now
fair enough.
>nobody said this. people are just pointing out the artist didn't have the most noble intentions
>Judging someone based on something they drew
>T. filename Data Farmer
The white girl isn't white
And serena williams literally looks like that, its just that nobodys saying it
So yes the cartoonist is NOT a racist.
Uh why not. Not everyone lives in a liberal bubble. You're the type of person that had a panic attack when Trump won the election
I think I'd choose mike tyson over serena. I don't want to see what she looks like naked.
>facts are racist
Well, racism doesn't seem to bad then
>>Judging someone based on something they drew
Art is used to express ideas. How can you be this much of a brainlet?
i think it is racist, probably just for attention. because of that white opponent like you guys were joking about, seems to me it's for contrast, i don't get what other reason you'd have for that change.
>Art is used to express ideas. How can you be this much of a brainlet?
What the fuck are you talking about? I never said it wasn't used to express ideas. People seem to be under the impression that he made a mistake because they are applying the mythology of political asshatery to something not even remotely related to politics. That's fine and all, but don't put words and beliefs into an artists mouth ("he's racist because he drew it extra "Racisty") because of something he drew. He's making fun of her temper tantrum in the form of a comic.
TL;DR: Learn what a "false premise" is.
ITT: Tumblr trannies
Gee, you guys really are sensitive about a race most of you probably aren't part of in the first place.
he didn't have to make it a racist cartoon, but he did, knowing full well that retards (the center, the right) would buy into the argument of plausible deniability that this was just a normal inoffensive cartoon and that some people just want to see offense where there isn't any. of course it helps to have a horde of disengenuious actors knowing full well the subtext of the cartoon, but are willing to play stupid and muddy up the argument enough with petty terminology (or in this case, pedanticism about facial features/skin color). it's what reactionaries do over and over again - and even though it loses it's effectiveness as people come to more deftly identify their tactics - it's always worth the controversy because they can walk away from the outrage fooling the retards that the argument at the very least is a wash. it can't be said enough how much useful idiots (for example, andy racewarski) help these people.
lol
shut up shanequa ubuntu.
>no no no, i'm not being tricked into working against my own class
if only every American could be this beautiful
???
lol nigga, don't believe everything you see in college XD
>make obviously racist cartoon
>claim it's artistic stylization and exaggeration
>bigoted racists love the racist style but publicly defend it for supposed artistic freedom and innocent exaggeration
genius
yep, that place where the smart people go is definitely where people are wrong, definitely high school drop outs are the real professors
Nobody would have complained if the ugly fat women were white. It's only racist to you because it hits the reality you have deeply buried.
i can't believe people are still saying the same shit, like you understand that things exist in relation to other things, that each new thing doesn't come into a contextless void
i graduated from berkeley, what now nigger
holy fuck those forearms i want to touch them and feel the muscles
so you're still a class traitor but you don't have the excuse of being uneducated
> he rendered the black lady with the soft brush so there’s gradation while the other player is in flats.
Are you an idiot? It's because Serena is the focal point, occupying much more space on the page that actually gives the artist room to shade whereis the other player is just a tiny figure in the far back? Do you even draw yourself?
theres nothing racist about this one, just insecure black people who hate themselves and always play the victim. the artist exaggerate features regardless of skin color if you see his other ones and he actually captured it pretty well desu.
this too
I don't know it doesn't realy look like Serena to me, but a generic racist cartoon face.
Which may not be intentional since Osaka doesn't look like Osaka either, she might as well be Kerber Williams, a white blond girl Serena also lost the final too a tournament ago.
answer to yourself, my poor user.
i like that lynching talk though. 'you have no excuse. die.' how much hatred must you have for humanity to be trapped in such a state? boggles my mind.
>Kerber Williams
Kerber Angelique, mistype
It's the kind of comic you show to friends but not make public. Is it racist? Yeah, could be interpreted that way. The artist definitely knew what he was doing. Obviously it looks like Serena, but as a cartoonist, you know damn well what a racist caricature is.
who said die. how is it to be so detached from humanity that you'll happily work against your own interest because being a nasty cunt is less 'cringey' than having real concern for your fellow man.
Those old timey caricatures came from a place of observation too though. They weren't really done with hatred and racism in mind either, more like bewilderment and amusement. Unlike say caricatures of the japanese during ww2.
>36 posters
where do these shitters come from? Why don't you faggots contribute to actual art making threads rather than more politics bullshit?
>where do these shitters come from?
tumblr sjws
being a nasty cunt to you is more removed from my attitude towards humanity, more than you think. the problem isnt people who spit on humanity, it is how much you fixate on things that offend you, but thats been said and done.
definitely read loomis
>>draws black girl with exaggerated features and manly gorilla body
That's what she looks like.
Citizens of country Nigeria need to calm down.
Are you blind? She's clearly darker than the referee? Sometimes people here just confuse me so much
>Sometimes people here just confuse me so much
>step 1: draw a caricatured cartoon of someone
>step 2: is that person white?
>Y: it's not racist, sweetie
>N: it's racist, you bigot
you wish faggot, but it's Jow Forums
>based Crumb
>Obviously it looks like Serena, but as a cartoonist, you know damn well what a racist caricature is.
How is the caricature racist? How would the caricature look like if it wasn't racist?
Are you just offended at seeing black features represented in ugly cartoons?
>college
>a place where smart people go
you have to go back son
>footfags
This.
>Comic exists in a vacuum
>You're-the-real-racist
Like clockwork
>deleted
Nigs are so fragile lmao
The funny thing is that the artist also defends abbos
Where did I say that you're racist?
>Are you just offended at seeing black features represented in ugly cartoons?
Pedantry doesn't work if I can copy what you wrote exactly. "N-no, I meant that you don't ever want to see in a bad light, i-it's just caricature". It looks nothing like her and everything like a caricature of a racist's idea of a black woman. Fuck, even r crumb did a better job.
*See black people in a bad light
fucking hell they also deleted his account.
way to prove the caricature right, imbeciles.
>It looks nothing like her and everything like a caricature of a racist's idea of a black woman
Did you even look at these two images here?
Big muscular arms, pointy ears, angular lips, pony tail, frizzy hair. It looks at least 50% like her, not "nothing like her." How is it a "racist's idea of a black woman" when it captures nearly every feature of her from the photo?
The image you posted in appears to be based off of her when she was younger. And I'll admit myself that that's what I remembered her as, and I was surprised to see the more recent photos of her.
You can't draw blacks with gigantic lips, that's an old racist stereotype
ESPECIALLY if they don't actually have them
OP pic barely looks like an exaggeration. If I traced this image and published it online with no source I'm pretty sure people would accuse me of drawing a racist charicature.
Even worse, you'd probably get called a transphobe
That cartoonish minstrel show just doesn't look like her, and is pretty mean spirited besides.
>It looks at least 50%
>it captures nearly every feature of her from the photo
So which is it? Inb4 "I said at least".
Legitimately feeling bad for the artist after hearing them interview him desu. Outrage political culture is a fucking mistake and a man is at risk of feeding his family less because of it.
oh shut up. he knew exactly what he was doing
so why didn’t he draw Osaka with slanty eyes, a wide flat nose, flat manly chest, broad shoulders if He’s just depicting features as they are
