I guess the Soviets never really decriminalized homosexuality. Also, you could be sent to gulag for literally nothing. It didn't matter if you were guilty of anything real or made up. They just had quotas and they had fill up the camps that were designed to serve as slave labor exploitation facilities. Most inmates worked in mines or built power plants, bridges, etc. There was a special network called Kolyma (in Northeastern Russia) that was the harshest among all. It was designed to slowly work the inmates to death while being only fed so little to keep them alive for the next work day.

My grandpa spent 7 years in a Soviet coal mine (as POW), where they still had better conditions than many gulag prisoners elsewhere. I've always wanted ask him about what he experienced there, but then I decided not to bring it up, most of us young people wouldn't even survive a week or a day under those circumstances.

Going to gulags was a death sentence but it was not capital punishment. It was a labor camp, where you were worked to death, not put to death.

My grandpa had the lowest officer's rank in the army and spent approx. a year fighting. Most of the Hungarian army fell at the Don, my grandpa was lucky to survive that attack. He commanded a small group of Ruthenians (formerly part of Hungary, now Ukraine) and so larped as one of them since the Ruthenians understood Russian (my grandpa just kept silent and escaped execution or harsh punishments) and managed to get a better "reputation" than other Hungarian POWs immediately after capture. But that didn't help them from escaping POW camp.
Most Hungarian Germans, even children were sent to labor camps after the Soviets marched in in 1944. Some of my distant relatives parents were also conscripted for forced labor, simply because had a German name, though they were assimilated to Hungarian culture by that time. A German name was enough "crime" under communism.
And then Eastern European countries had to celebrate "liberation" for 40 years.

Point was it was a labor camp, not a death camp. Killing someone by negligence is not the same thing as intentionally murdering someone after a period of time. But people died anyway on both.
