SunspotAnon — AMA Update

I work[ed] up at the Dunn telescope [at Sunspot, NM], yesterday I did an AMA and said I'd ask around and report back: Unfortunately they were essentially as in the dark as I, one not even having heard about the closure until today.

I can answer a few speculations --
It's microwave.

Comms up there is pretty spotty during inclement weather; and Facilities is literally two guys, one of whom is a water management specialist [wastewater, IIRC].

>>They were testing Missiles at White Sands, NM the same time of the shutdown probably related.
That would be exceedingly odd. The telescope is above 8000ft, almost 9000 [IIRC] -- I don't know that it has enough elevation-range to look *down* into WSMR.

> Chinese espionage is a good guess. Our instutions are crawling with chink and Israeli spies.
Even so, we were running a skeleton-crew there. In the telescope there were less than a half-dozen people, and the actual residents were less than a dozen. (It was about 90 people in the past.)

Fuck off larper

wow you have a NMSU uni ID (that doesn't expire by the way), just like tens of thousands of other people.

surely this means you work at the Dunn telescope.

sage

>>wow you have a NMSU uni ID (that doesn't expire by the way), just like tens of thousands of other people.
Well what do you want? It's been evacuated, I'm forbidden to return "until further notice", and all the stuff I could use to prove it is still up there.

>surely this means you work at the Dunn telescope.
How about a screenshot from our trac wiki page?

Weren't you going to some sort of onsite meeting today? Find out anything new?

So close to 9-11, my best guess would be some type of credible threat was made and they shut down until it can be resolved.

>Weren't you going to some sort of onsite meeting today?

It was a meeting at NMSU with a bunch of Project Managers from National Science Foundation. / See pic.

> Find out anything new?
I was hoping they might be in the loop, due to NSF's relation in Sunspot; unfortunately for me, no dice.

>So close to 9-11, my best guess would be some type of credible threat was made and they shut down until it can be resolved.
Maybe; but it's so far out in the middle of nowhere that that doesn't make any sense. (Terrorists go for impactful targets, not middle of nowhere.)

This fucking useless asshole back again. Give new info or post sharpie in aperture.

You are attention whoring and wasting our time.

i remember seeing in the news a few days ago a report saying we would have a colder than average winter because there haven't been any sunspots lately. could that have something to do with this? is there going to be some kind of catastrophe?

Everything is fine.

FWIW I recognize you from last night, don't believe you're larping, and appreciate the discussion even if you're not able to provide additional information.

I used to live in El Paso and went to cloudcroft frequently. I toured sunspot once. Seemed like state of the art 1972. With a few laptops.
What gives with the antiquities?

I believe you user. Go on. Theres just a fuck ton of shills out tonight

We are in a minimum now, IIUC. I've heard that the sunspot activity does correlate pretty well with weather here. (Not really my field; but I do listen.)

>>Its probably related to pedophile faggot Democrats and their muslims. Not the sun.
That'd be weird; as I've said the internet connectivity up there isn't the best; it's good enough in the clear for most things, but we can't shoot data down to NMSU with any reliability. (Too limited in bandwidth and latency; too dependent on good weather.)

>>FWIW I recognize you from last night, don't believe you're larping, and appreciate the discussion even if you're not able to provide additional information.
Thank you. I'm happy to share what I do know, and point out some of the rabbit-trails as rabbit trails. (I *do* have a vested interest in finding out what's going on, considering I work there.)

>Oops, on a cell phone taking a shit in a coffee shop.
No harm, no foul.

I'll bite.

Was there anything odd going on leading up to this?

>In the telescope there were less than a half-dozen people
How many are likely to be paedos, whom the feds are up there to arrest for distributing CP?

Another larp thread. Thanks Q niggers for making this common

Aliens?

>I used to live in El Paso and went to cloudcroft frequently. I toured sunspot once. Seemed like state of the art 1972. With a few laptops.
>What gives with the antiquities?

Well, part of it is NSO pulled out so fast when the Hawaii facility got funding -- dkist.nso.edu/ -- there was a giant sucking sound. Then someone realized "if we don't have data for X years we'll be irrelevant!" so they kept things open, but with a skeleton-crew's skeleton crew. (There's a, singular, telescope operator; the job should probably have three, maybe four, for skeleton crew operations.)

There used to be people living there, but there was some political BS between NSO, Apache Point, and NMSU about the housing -- so they all got kicked out of housing.

Basically everything about the run-down, abandoned state boils down to the "bean counter" mentality where they see only cost/expense and nothing about potential.

>Was there anything odd going on leading up to this?
No.
The oddest thing was the operator was forced to use his leave/vacation the day before -- he'd accumulated a lot because being the only operator, he can't really take vacations and satisfy the "gather data every day possible" directive. (Actually I'm not sure this is the *real* directive, but this is how it came across in a few conversations.)

Wtf I opened this pic and had an overwhelming sense of dread wash over me.

The fuck is that shit

well what do you think this is about then?

Quick rundown? What's happening? Are aliens coming?

>>>In the telescope there were less than a half-dozen people
>How many are likely to be paedos, whom the feds are up there to arrest for distributing CP?
I have no idea the ratio for pedos, in the wild, but nothing really seemed off about any of them to me. FWIW.

Also given the internet there, and it doesn't take much to impact it: a little wind and a sprinkle will have noticeable impact -- and the thing seems ridiculous to me.

>Aliens?
No.
There were several ongoing issues with the turret which we (well, the on-site electrical engineer) were tracking down. Plus the operator had been ordered to take leave/vacation the day before the closure.

Post some autism related to your technical specialty if real. Doesn't matter what, just sperg the fuck out about some science shit

>well what do you think this is about then?

Everything's so weird -- *nothing* seems to 'fit'.

Having prior military experience, I can say that the "ongoing security issue" we keep getting sound very hollow. (I've had some occasion to enter SCIFs, and have had all the Death-by-PowerPoint security briefings... nothing at Sunspot "rings any bells".) -- Some of the stuff in the past, sure... but all of that is gone now.

Given that the closure isnt limited only to your facility, what wold be your best guess, as to what is going on?

So what the fuck is going on? I need to be spoon-fed...

Judging by OPs feminine beta Fingers I can tell he works with telescopes.

AND WHO LEFT THIS (pic related) in the Trash at the main lab?

well do you think its sun related, space related, alien related, pedo related? if its just pedo or stupid human shit i dont care. i want a happening

>Post some autism related to your technical specialty if real.

Ok. I'm involved in Computer Science, and they brought me in to do a "modernization and homogenization" effort -- this is because the Telescope runs computers running OSes like Win98, WinXP, Solaris, even an 68k vxWorks.

The setup we currently have is:
8 Virtual Cameras Control Computers [VCCC] / essentially there to provide drivers for the cameras, presenting a virtual camera to the CCCs.
8 Camera Control Computers, which can connect to any one of the VCCCS, and can control some cameras directly.
1 ICC - Instrument Control Computer.
1 P4MCC - Port 4 Mechanism Control Computer. (Ports 1..3 aren't really used any more; except Port 2 sometimes is.)
There's a few more, but this gives a general idea of how it's been grown, rather than designed.

Some people from the observatory were taken to underground caves because shit is about to go down and their skills will be useful, of course there was no point in keep operating the telescope without the smartest people there so they told everyone to leave the area.
OP was left behind because he is probably the jannie.

>>Given that the closure isnt limited only to your facility, what wold be your best guess, as to what is going on?
There really isn't even enough data to really guess well there. / If it's a solar-flare, then shutting down across multiple countries is just weird.

>AND WHO LEFT THIS (pic related) in the Trash at the main lab?
I'm not sure, the main lab is essentially abandoned except for several servers. The plan is to move the servers to the telescope, but with the closure who knows what's going on.

>OP, WHAT WAS THE WEIRD SMELL THAT LINGERED AFTER FBI LEFT?
Can't say; I left just before the site was closed/evacuated; I saw the Sheriff blast past me lights blazing as I was going down the mountain; IIRC it was about at High Rolls where I saw him.

>There really isn't even enough data to really guess well there.

Try. You dont have to be right; just make an educated guess.

What reason would there be to shutdown multiple facilities and even websites? What are the commonalities regarding the capabilities of each respective facility?

Gun to your head? Gimme your best guess?

>By posting so many i dont knows
By posting "I don't know" I am being completely open and honest about the limitations of my knowledge.

A LARP would waste your time posting BS, but I'll gladly give you what I know if I can.

CIA here. We are all fucked. Make peace with your maker. I am part of a clean up crew assigned to prepare shelters. THEY are landing tomorrow.

>I'm not sure
What about that guy huh?

He wants to post your dox info livestream, shoot yourself in the head on said livestream so he can move on to another thread. He's the typical SJW like... It's never enough for niggers like him.

Wild speculation: massive computing and/or data storage/sharing. Child porn? Perhaps. Leaking state secrets? Well there's nothing in Sunspot that's classified anymore... but there are indications that there's BS in NSF, possibly deep-state but more likely SJW infestation that will corrupt the data and science performed, though I have no idea how that could involve FBI, unless it was something like perverts sharing porn.

The old man's office? I only gave it a once over; I was probably in there for less than five minutes. One thing that I did notice was a walker up against one of the walls. Kinda weird he'd leave that.

Hey; I got to go eat -- I'll be back after dinner.

cant imagine all of that for child porn.

Thanks.

Could the data they are gathering at the place be detected by anything else? Like radios or satellite dishes? Maybe there were interuptions wif and when there might have been ayy lmao communication

/x/ fag here, apparently theres rumors ayy lmaos will fuck the planet in 4 days.

Ayyyy senpai!
I’m at NMSU too.

Excellent bread btw OP

What scripting language do you post process data in and how do you save your scripts.

What do you actually do day to day?

How many NSLs have you recieved?

What side of the break room is the coffee maker on and what make and model is it?

fill us in while op finishes his tendies

Im not big into occult shit nor do I know much about it, but apparently the occult-space-jews (not humans) are coming to fuck the planet because their brainwashing tactics failed (The 2016 election and such)

4 days from which timezone? USA? China? Antarctica?

This is a fucking LARP. The telescope is built into the ground pointing straight up at the sun. 2/3s of the scope is underground in a giant hole. If you were legit you would have known this simple fact not simply speculating that they can’t point the scope Down towards white sands.

Since 50% of America and 100% of every other country in the world is still brainwashed, I'm sure the spacejews are cozying up around a campfire right now

not sure, a thread on /x/ said the preppers will be the last to survive though.

yeah they said they will do blue beam on monday, its also my birthday.

>>Got any weird/interesting stories about your work/space?

The EE and I were talking after work one day, walking towards housing, and the lady who works the Visitor Center has this bike -- the tires on this thing are huge, like three inches thick -- and she comes riding along and the EE makes a joke about the size of the tires and how they're for running people over.

Hm, not all that interesting, but it was kind of funny.

The relative campfire that is the sun anyway

They're saying it's because of the liquid mercury that the bearings on the telescope float in, the OP has probably got acute mercury poisoning and is walking dead.

suspicious0bservers is great. Spaceweather.com is an excellent source for sun conditions

>Could the data they are gathering at the place be detected by anything else?
Most of it is visible-spectrum, plus sometimes the FLIR; the Dunn is the most advanced Solar Telescope in operation, even now... so it *is* possible that there's things detectable by only it.

What's your opinion on this pulled from NASA sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/data/LATEST/current_c3.gif

Thanks!

>I’m at NMSU too.
What degree are you shooting for?

Are any of your colleagues worried, acting strangely, unusually stressed or are they just shocked and curious?

Are there any hazardous materials in your building or was there ever any doubt in your mind as to the structural integrity of it?

You've mentioned poor and unreliable networking, how likely is it that someone tried to hack it and to what level could they interfere with the equipment?

Maybe there are multiple scopes?

how bigs ya dick

link?

>the main lab is essentially abandoned except for several servers. The plan is to move the servers

I wonder if these are gone/different/replaced now.

What was the evidence?

Be honest, what's the largest object you've ever stuck up your ass?

I wanted to ask you a question last time, but you had already gone to bed by the time I found the thread. I hope your meeting went well and that you figured out what you wanted to figure out. Here's my question(s):

You're providing clear and transparent answers to many questions from curious anons at a time when the FBI has shut down a site and is VERY tight-lipped about the reasons why. I don't understand why you'd decide to start answering questions now, one would think because of FBI involvement that more information would be a bad thing. So tell me, were you ASKED by someone to come here and answer questions? I would think that whistleblower laws are things you'd be flirting with right now, but your openness says otherwise.

This is correct. He'd have known that the thing always looks up.

Prove you're not a LARPER
How long are your darks, how long are you flats? What are the biases, and how do you use them to calibrate? Also explain RA/DEC and why you can't use Pythagorean in astronomy for star hopping.
Don't worry guys, I'll tell you if he's a larper

>What scripting language do you post process data in and how do you save your scripts.
"You" as in the telescope? Most of the scripts there are shell-scripts.

"You" as in personally? I'm of the school of thought that the computer ought to detect-and-reject erroneous code -- bondage and discipline languages appeal to me. (I'm actually a fan of Ada.)

>What do you actually do day to day?
Read specifications -- we're really at the very, *VERY* beginning of the upgrade/modernization.

>How many NSLs have you recieved?
Sorry, can you expand this acronym?

>What side of the break room is the coffee maker on and what make and model is it?
The break-room was *just* undergoing some work by facilities, but it was/is an old Dark-room right off the Bridge, opposite the Table. (Entering the break-room the coffee would be on the right; a Kuerig.)

Preppers meaning the people who prepare for it will be the first to die?

No evidence

Also tell me what the significance of (sin(x))/x = 1 is for your field

theres like 6 threads about it, just look, and im a phoneposter so im too lazy to link it
theres gifs and images (unsure if photoshopped) of sperm-like things going to our sun, also various sun observatory cams are down right now

wouldn't be the same without you m8

There's an elevation-control on the turret -- kind of like a turret-on-a-turret construction for a periscope, IIUC -- this accounts for rotation in a plane perpendicular to the rotation of the turret-proper.

I felt those feels too.

Its happening!!! They're here sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/data/LATEST/current_c3.gif

>They're saying it's because of the liquid mercury that the bearings on the telescope float in, the OP has probably got acute mercury poisoning and is walking dead.

I'm not too worried about it; there are some safeties -- in particular the Hg is separated from the regular atmosphere by a layer of oil -- plus the operator did inform us that in extreme levels of Hg vapor you could taste it. (I've never tasted it.)

I'm out of questions, but can you tell us what's happening in Cloudcroft?
I miss that little village So nice & comfy. Did a lot of camping up in the Sacramento's. Good stuff Share some stories with us, OP

Attached: medium_hes-almost-a-millionaire-1522788727.jpg (600x336, 34K)

bait harder nigger, we're trying to have important discussions here

Thanks, SunspotAnon

With all the popular theories out the window, and the recent Jihadi school shooter training camp found in NM, and the remote and mountainous wilderness surrounding Sunspot... Do you think a jihadi camp / cartel child smuggling camp / temple of moloch, etc, might have been found in the forest and the FBI needs to cover it up? If it's a big site they would need the helicopters and a staging area. Clearing out Sunspot would make a perfect staging area and a good misdirection for conspiracy theorists.

Any brave anons want to go on a hike, or at least observe comings and goings on the road from Cloudcroft?

There's a rotating mirror at the top of the tower. No particular reason to believe they couldn't point it at White Sands. Whether the telescope could get a useful image is another question. There would be a lot of atmosphere in the way.

So tax dollars fund you reading specifications. Let me guess: you are a people person.

What the fuck do you actually do to move science forward you worthless
piece of shit snorting taxpayer leeching larper shitbag?

Same as last night, full of air and nothing tangible. Like the feds.

Lower my taxes you fucks.

>Are any of your colleagues worried, acting strangely, unusually stressed or are they just shocked and curious?
I haven't been in any real contact with anyone else up there since I received word to stay in Las Cruces. (I'd say more shocked/curious.)

>Are there any hazardous materials in your building or was there ever any doubt in your mind as to the structural integrity of it?
Those buildings were built *SOLID* -- the telescope, in particular, looks like it was built as a bomb-shelter (there's an actual bomb-shelter on site) -- so nothing there.

Other than the Mercury, there's nothing particularly hazardous that comes to mind. (Any asbestos there is fine so long as you don't do something stupid like sand-blast it.)

>You've mentioned poor and unreliable networking, how likely is it that someone tried to hack it and to what level could they interfere with the equipment?
There's a possibility for that; I've heard there've been hacking attempts on Apache Point, but I never got around to talking shop with their tech-guy.

Any sauce on her
