Honestly wondering why we shouldn't just create "Mars colonies" right here on Earth instead of on Mars proper. Just realized how mind-numbingly stupid this whole concept of "we gotta leave for another planet goys!" is.

We have the technology and resources to do this now, but no will. If there were some fire lit under the public arse we could launch a series of existing spacecraft loaded with convicts and supply-laden capsules. Given less than a year of training, and several years to actually get there and set up, they could have a permanent, livable, but very ugly and spare campsite. That's with technology we have now.
