I'm guessing that was true for older vehicles but modern vehicles don't wash out the oil lining on cylinder walls nearly as much and the oil pumps are still just as functional even with zero fuel input when going downhill. I've been engine braking for quite some time with no ill effects.

That doesn't denigrate the merit of using brakes downhill. They're still important, especially on the downhills.
