Now that the dust has finally settled. Why did he choose Doenitz as his successor? Is it because he was the most loyal military commander, and since there was basically no navy left, the additional duties wouldn't hurt him? Doenitz was in the navy long before 1933, so it's rather interesting that an old-guard military leader was chosen, rather than a more stout National Socialist, like Goebbels. Maybe he chose Doenitz specifically because he would be the best person to surrender. Since he was from the pre-natsoc era, he would get more sympathy from the West. Or he knew that Goebbels would kill himself anyways.
