Depressing how that happens. I'm American so I don't know any chavs, but I certainly knew plenty of the American equivalent growing up. They were just like any other kids, a few were even particularly intelligent. Fast forward to our mid/late 20s, and most of even the smart ones have been to jail, work shit jobs, married fat girls they knew in high school, etc. It doesn't seem fair, when some of the dumbest kids I knew now have nice jobs and good-looking educations

I think it really depends in both cases. There's part of the working class that are repulsive degenerates basically sitting in their own shit. Gaudy and cultureless. But there's another side of the middle class that's proud, hardworking, earthy people who take pride in their work, focus on developing themselves, and reject consumerism of mainstream society.

With the middle class, the most repulsive people are the ones "entertaining themselves to death" - habitual consumers, constantly buying new toys to keep themselves entertained, watching TV to inundate themselves. Docile and reprehensible, and ready to attack anyone who isn't as "normal" and superficial as them. But there's another side of the middle class - basically the skilled workers, or what would've been the "artisan" class in past ages. These are the small business owners, the scientists, the engineers, the craftsmen, etc.
