The British singing we never, never will be slaves is laughable really. The are slaves of the City of London and are too blind to see it. Their government is controlled by the City and its interests dictate policy. Brexit is only happening to protect the City of London's postion and its multi TRILLION pound global financial shenanigans.

Going back to ‘45, we were dead broke, and massively indebted to the US, and we didn’t benefit from the Marshall Plan to rebuild our infrastructure. We then had Socialists nationalise our industry and drive it into the ground. We were the sick man of Europe and the EEC was sold as a great trade deal, our treacherous politicians lied about losing our sovereignty. Follow that up with ~40 years of our laws being written by the EU, and getting out is time consuming and difficult.
Please remember though, our political classes don’t represent the people, at least outside the cities.

One must remember that the US desired for the destruction of the British Empire pretty much from its inception. WW2 just gave a chance to achieve it.
Thanks to that our current empire is purely financial with no dominions. We control massive amounts of their financial sector now, as well as having them fight most our wars, so there’s that.

Here is an interesting documentary that calls Britains financial sector the Second Empire. I think a lot of people underestimate the massive influence on finance and share of global wealth controlled by Britain and the City of London.
