The only disagreement between Trotsky and Stalin was in who should become the Great Leader. Their policies and strategies were barely different (Stalin took collectivisation from Trotsky's camp).

Nobody that actually believes in communism gets anywhere near the levers of power, just like nobody who actually believes in capitalism gets anywhere near the levers of power.
Stalin above all had the consolidated power to actually attempt communism, he could have dissolved the state, he could have taken the leap that nobody ever has, but instead he chose to kick the can down the road like the rest of his peers.
I'm not sure what i consider him to be, my sticking point that prevents me from learning concretely towards any label is that I don't particularly believe any interpretation for his motivations. I'm not actually sure what to think of him, and I've read dozens of books on him and the Soviet Union in his era.
