That data literally aligns with what the Indian government surveyed in 2015. In 2014, over 50% of the population defecated in the open, by 2015 that number went down to 40%.
It's not "muh fake", it's because the "Clean India" awareness campaign became very aggressive after 2014. seen the change myself here, the front street at my house used to be littered with plastics and paper, but now they installed several trashcans and become unironically use them.
