I saw gypsies when I was in London, or people that looked like gypsies to me. Your impression is correct. The sort of racism (at least, what would be called racism is anyone dared aim it at blacks or Muslims) that gets thrown at gypsies is insane. There's a town near me that actually has signs up around the place that forbid gypsies and travellers from being there, put up by the council too. There's still open hostility (between gadjo, non-Roma, never to our actual faces) about gypsies in Britain like it's completely fine, while these same people can't even say the word "black" without worrying they'll be arrested for a hate crime. The disconnect is unreal. I do not like targeting specific groups of people either, but Gypsies really can not be civilized. If anything, slave came from Slav, by way of Greek, then Latin, then French, and finally English. Mostly a historical thing, since a lot of Slavs were indeed enslaved. The Byzantine empire didn't enslave them, it governed them. Enslave has a very different meaning, even more different back then. The idea that a whole people can be slaves is a modern one, because of the west african slave trade and the american colonies.
